Volunteer for JA Company Program - JA Greater Miami
A Continuous Entrepreneurship Mentorship Opportunity
What is JA Company Program?
The JA Company Program is a Junior Achievement initiative that teaches high school students how to start and run their own businesses. Through hands-on activities, students create, market, and manage a product or service, learning key entrepreneurial, financial, and leadership skills. Guided by volunteer mentors, the program helps students understand real-world business operations, decision-making, and teamwork over the course of several weeks.
What Do Volunteers Do?
Volunteers in the JA Company Program mentor high school students through the process of starting and running their own businesses. They provide guidance on key aspects like business planning, product development, marketing, and financial management. Volunteers also share their professional experiences, help students make informed decisions, and offer feedback to improve their ideas. Over the course of 6 mentorship visits, they play a crucial role in fostering the students’ entrepreneurial and leadership skills.
What Is the Role of the Teacher?
The role of the teacher in the JA Company Program is to facilitate the learning environment and support the volunteers and students. Teachers help coordinate logistics, such as scheduling the mentorship visits and ensuring the classroom is prepared for the sessions. While volunteers provide business guidance, the teacher is responsible to provide the business instruction, maintain classroom management, and reinforce the program’s concepts between volunteer visits. They also collaborate with volunteers to align the program with the students’ broader educational goals.
What Is JA Staff's Role?
JA staff play a crucial role in coordinating and supporting the JA Company Program. They manage logistics, recruit and train volunteers, and serve as a liaison between schools, teachers, and volunteers. JA staff provide the necessary materials, resources, and curriculum to ensure the program runs smoothly. They also monitor the program's progress, offer ongoing support to both volunteers and teachers, and address any issues that may arise. Additionally, JA staff may evaluate the program’s impact and gather feedback to improve future implementations.
What Is My Time Commitment?
The time commitment for the JA Company Program involves 6 mentorship visits, with each visit typically lasting one hour. Volunteers may also spend additional time outside of these sessions preparing and reviewing materials, depending on their involvement. Overall, the program spans several weeks, allowing for a manageable but impactful commitment to the students’ entrepreneurial journey.
