4th Annual Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge

Event Completed!

When: Thursday, October 24, 2019
Where: Akerman LLP | 98 SE 7th Street, 11th Floor | Miami, FL
Time: 9:00 AM ET

The Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge, the first of its kind in Florida, begins with an in-school program, taught by business volunteers, for high school students within our community. JA volunteers visit high school classrooms, instructing the theory of the stock market and allowing students to gain a fundamental understanding of investing. Business volunteers provide the tools necessary to assist students in developing a solid understanding of how private enterprise works.

Students are taught economic education is not only about financial literacy; rather, it is also about the larger economic forces which affect everyone’s financial circumstance. The Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge allows students to visualize, first-hand, how the laws of economics unfold in the real world. With equity markets as the model, students see the raw and unfettered forces of private enterprise and market economics play out. Unlike real equity markets, the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge offers students a safe and pain-free place to learn and practice valuable lessons about economic decision making, investing, and market forces. The final classroom visit is an online simulation, and the program culminates with a capstone event/competition, between thirteen high schools. This event has become known as the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge.

This is Junior Achievement’s fourth year executing this exciting program and fast-paced competition, and we welcome SunTrust’s participation. The competition portion of the event will take place on Thursday, October 24th with a student competition in the morning. Later that day, in the evening, an adult event and cocktail reception for the program sponsors takes place, featuring the same exciting stock trading competition, at the same venue.

We are grateful to Akerman LLP for once again donating their office space on the 11th floor of their headquarters at the Brickell City Centre. It is truly exciting to see Akerman’s conference rooms transform into a stock exchange trading floor, with five giant screens displaying team standings and stock price charts. During the event, the entire space is buzzing with energy!

Each team receives $1 million to invest in anywhere from 20 – 50 fictitious stocks (based on real-life companies). Each trading day brings news from the financial markets, challenging participants to analyze and decide what actions (if any) they should take.

The twist? Each trading day is between 60 – 90 seconds long! With two 15-minute breaks, we simulate two months in about 90 minutes. Adding to the excitement – players must use floor traders (JA volunteers) to process their transactions – and (by design) there are never enough traders to go around!

At the end of the competition, the closing bell rings, and student winners are recognized for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Net Worth. Later that evening, the adult competition winners are recognized in two categories, 1st and 2nd Net Worth, and 1st and 2nd Highest Return on Investment.

In addition to being recognized by your corporate peers as being the most astute trader, prizes will be given to the top two teams with the highest net worth. The 1st Place Team will receive recognition on the JA electronic sign, a rotating trophy for the winning school, promotion via JA’s social media channels, and acknowledgement on the JA website.

Not just for kids! This event is not just for kids – adults love it too! It is a fun, exciting, and unique event that appeals to financial professionals in many segments – accounting, banking, insurance, investing, legal, you name it!

The 4th Annual Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge will be divided into two sessions:

Morning Session: 9am-12pm 250 High School students will participate
Evening Session: 5pm-7:30pm 250 Business professionals will participate
