The Magic of JA BizTown

Often, for adults in charge of planning and running operations at a JA BizTown location, the details and planning can be so distracting, we forget how unforgettable a visit can be for students.

JA BizTown is Junior Achievement's elementary grades program that combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to a fully-interactive simulated town. Through JA's curriculum and hands-on activities, students develop an understanding of the relationship between what they learn in school and their successful participation in the global economy.

A recent article published in the Brandywine School District Review, reminds us of the magic of JA BizTown. According to Perry Bacon, administrative director for Junior Achievement of Delaware, fifth grade students at Hanby Elementary School in Wilmington recently spent a day at JA of Delaware's JA BizTown. The experience inspired one student, Madelyn Williams, to share her impressions in the school district's newsletter.

"We went on this trip because Hanby's wonderful teachers thought that there was a better way to teach the students than sitting in desks and studying a screen or board. Instead, we got the opportunity to learn how to write checks, manage a business, purchase items, and use quality services at JA BizTown," Madelyn wrote.

According to Madelyn, prior to going on the field trip, all of the students were educated about the various businesses at JA BizTown. The students also had to fill out job applications for three different jobs. While at JA BizTown, each student had specific job duties and a daily schedule.

"A couple days before going to JA BizTown, we were all assigned the job that would best fit our abilities," Madelyn continued. "It was as if we were all adults in a real-world situation. This field trip really made students understand the importance of business skills and gaining knowledge of our world. It was definitely a privilege to be able to go on this extraordinary field trip."
