Teacher Bids Farewell to Long-Time Volunteer

For second grade teacher Irene McGinnis, the end of the school year always comes with mixed emotions. While she looks forward to summer break, she also has to say her goodbyes to her students and colleagues and one very special Junior Achievement volunteer.

For more than 10 years, Junior Achievement volunteer Theresa Hanson has taught JA Our Community lessons at the Indian Brook Elementary School in Plymouth, Mass. Hanson spends 45 minutes every Friday afternoon teaching more than 50 students from the classes of Ms. McGinnis and Ms. McKenna. JA Our Community puts community life into perspective for students as they explore matters of business, citizenship, economics, and the interdependent roles of people working in a community. Hanson also makes the activity even more special by bringing in donut treats for the students to enjoy.

McGinnis expressed her appreciation. "It has been a pleasure getting to know Theresa and watching her evolve into an outstanding volunteer. We are so grateful to have her share our classroom with us for the past 10 years and look forward to welcoming her back again in the fall. Thank you, JA, for providing us with enriching programs and outstanding volunteers to teach our students."
