Student is Inspired by her JA Job Shadow Visit

Junior Achievement continuously monitors education trends to ensure that JA programs complement and reinforce classroom learning and align with future workforce needs. It is increasingly evident that in order for the United States to compete and succeed in the global marketplace, there exists an urgency to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Kathie Blanchette, vice president of education for Junior Achievement of Northern California <> , shared the story of how JA opened one student?s eyes to the possibility of a job in the engineering field.[Female Architect At Work] <> Delena Hoang grew up in the East Side of San Jose, Calif., in a low-income neighborhood where gang violence is prevalent. She found her home town a difficult place for high-achieving girls. She was teased for her interests in school and was told science was for boys. In high school, Delena was encouraged to pursue science by her school counselor because of her interests and aptitude. She eventually joined groups that allowed her to explore her interests in engineering and bio-chemistry.?When Delena first walked into Tesla <> for the JA Job Shadow <> Day and saw the engineers working, she knew she was on the right path. She was filled with excitement at seeing this world for the first time and was particularly struck by the number of women engineers. Their presence validated her passions for science and math. After participating in the JA Job Shadow Day at Tesla, Delena has renewed excitement to pursue a career in bio-chemical engineering.Delena took a step toward this career as she began attending college this fall. She already has plans to go to graduate school and is looking into internships. Although paying for the education will be difficult, Delena is committed to taking this important step toward her future career.
